Efflorescence removal in Ramsey, MN
That white, chalky bloom is mineral salt coming out of the masonry itself.
Efflorescence is the white, crusty bloom on Ramsey brick, block, concrete and pavers. It is salt that rises from inside the masonry itself, not a stain that landed on it, and it appears wherever moisture works its way out through the surface.
Efflorescence always comes out before any sealer goes on, because sealing over it locks the bloom under the coating. Carson Brenny, the owner, identifies the bloom, tests the surface and does the removal himself.

HONEST UP FRONT
Efflorescence is cosmetic. We lift what is there, but it can return, because cleaning cannot fix the moisture behind it.

What efflorescence removal means in Ramsey
The local conditions that shape how Glass House approaches efflorescence removal in Ramsey, and the standards it holds to on every visit.
HOMES
A median home built in 1996
The median Ramsey home was built in 1996, and about 41% of homes date from the 1990s and 2000s. After about three decades of sun, vinyl siding and painted trim break down at the surface into a chalky film, a process called oxidation. Rain running over the chalk leaves streaks, and the roughened surface gives dirt and algae a better grip. Newer pavers and concrete often bloom in their first seasons, before any sealer should go on.
WATER
Very hard, 255 to 290 PPM
Ramsey classifies its city water as very hard, at about 255 to 290 PPM (parts per million). A new treatment plant opened in spring 2026 to remove iron and manganese, and some homes are on private wells. Water that hard dries into white spots on glass and a dull film on siding, and private wells bypass the plant, so their spray can also leave orange iron stains on siding and concrete. Orange iron stains are a separate job, because rust removers do nothing to efflorescence and each stain needs its own chemistry.
WATERING
Summer odd/even and rain sensors
Ramsey city water users follow an odd/even schedule from Memorial Day to Labor Day, with no watering from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and every in-ground irrigation system, city or well, needs a rain sensor. Rain sensors stop cycles during rain, so less water dries on the house, but every cycle that reaches siding, glass or the driveway still leaves a thin layer of minerals in the same place. Aiming heads away from masonry means less water soaking in and fewer salts surfacing.
IDENTIFY FIRST
Three kinds of white
Crusty white on brick, block, concrete or pavers is efflorescence. White chalk that wipes off siding onto your hand is oxidation, the siding itself breaking down. A milky haze inside a sealer is trapped moisture. Each needs a different fix, and the treatment for one can make another permanently worse, which is why every white mark is identified before anything is applied.

HOW WE REMOVE IT
The right chemistry, in the right order
Efflorescence removal is acid work on masonry, so the order of each step matters as much as the product itself.
BLEACH AND ACID NEVER MEET
Efflorescence removal is acid work, and house-wash mixes are bleach. Together they produce chlorine gas, so acid never goes on a surface that has been soft washed without a full rinse and dry in between. The same rule applies to anyone working at home.
01
Identify it and spot test
Every job starts with a walk-around. We confirm it is efflorescence, not sealer haze, poly haze or oxidation, and test on a spot nobody sees, because some stone and colored concrete react to acid.
02
Clean in the right order
If the surface also needs degreasing or organic cleaning, that happens first, because oil repels water-based chemistry. Acid always goes last, on its own, after a thorough rinse.
03
Protect everything around it
Plants and landscaping are wet down before, during and after, so anything that drifts lands on a wet surface and is diluted to the point of being harmless. Acid products go on with a pump-up sprayer, never through a pressure washer.
04
Rinse and neutralize
After acid work, the surface is rinsed, neutralized and rinsed again. Residual acid keeps working after we leave and can etch the surface and spoil the bond of any sealer applied later, so this step is never skipped.
05
Stay off for a few hours
Keep people and pets off the treated area for at least 3 hours afterward, so the surface has time to dry and settle before it is walked on again.
FOR RAMSEY HOMES
What to know before your visit
NEW CONCRETE
28 days, minimum
No sealer goes on new concrete before 28 days. Sealing earlier traps moisture and free lime still working their way out, which shows up as a white haze and efflorescence under the film.
PAVER JOINTS
Poly sand haze is different
A white haze on pavers can also be polymeric joint sand left on the faces before it was activated with water. That haze is not efflorescence, so it is identified before anything is treated.
DOWNSPOUTS
Keep masonry drier
Downspouts that empty onto pavers or against a brick wall keep the masonry wet, so redirect them away from brick, block and pavers where possible.
FALL
Watch the dew
Cold nights and heavy morning dew turn fresh seals milky, because the coating cannot cure before moisture settles on it. If the fall window is marginal, book the sealing for spring.

Test first
Efflorescence removal is quoted after Carson walks the property, because the surface, the amount of bloom and whether it sits under a sealer all change the job. You will know what to expect before any work starts.

THE OWNER
The person who quotes your home does the work
Glass House is owned and run by Carson Brenny, with no crews, subcontractors or handoffs. He grew up in Ham Lake, went to Blaine High School and has worked full-time in exterior cleaning for six years. The person who quotes your home is the person who arrives, does the work and walks it with you at the end.
Every job receives the gentlest method that will do the work, because too much force or too strong a mix can cause damage that no cleaning undoes. Every homeowner receives a clear explanation of what is on the house, why the method was chosen and what cleaning can and cannot fix, before any money is spent.
IN CARSON'S WORDS
“It's my neighbors' homes: their biggest investment, one of the places they spend the most time, and where the people they care about most live. It's something everyone should enjoy, and I believe that.”
Carson Brenny, owner
WHAT IS INCLUDED
What efflorescence removal includes, and what it does not
Each efflorescence job covers identification, testing and a careful acid treatment. The moisture source and any sealing are separate matters.
INCLUDED
In every efflorescence job
• Confirmation that it is efflorescence, not sealer haze or oxidation
• A test on a spot nobody sees
• Organic cleaning or degreasing first, when needed
• The remover applied on its own, after a full rinse
• A rinse, neutralizing and a second rinse
NOT INCLUDED
Outside efflorescence removal
• Diagnosis or repair of the moisture source
• A promise it will not return while moisture moves through
• Sealer on new pavers before their first full season
• Masonry repair, tuckpointing or regrading
EQUIPMENT AND METHODS
A remover made for efflorescence
Efflorescence removers are acidic, so they go on with a pump-up sprayer, never through a pressure washer, in rubber gloves, a respirator and safety glasses. The remover is applied last and alone, after a full rinse and dry, and the surface is then rinsed, neutralized and rinsed again.
RAMSEY QUESTIONS
Efflorescence Removal in Ramsey: FAQ
Will efflorescence come back on my Ramsey pavers?
It can. Removal lifts the salts on the surface now, but it does not change the moisture moving through the masonry, so new salts can surface later. That is why efflorescence removal is considered cosmetic, and why we explain it before any work starts, so the result matches what you expect.
Do you serve all of Ramsey?
Yes, every neighborhood in Ramsey. Glass House is based in Ham Lake, and Ramsey is part of its regular north metro service area, so there is no trip fee. Carson quotes, cleans and walks every job himself, wherever in Ramsey your home is.
What is the white stuff on my brick or pavers?
Most likely efflorescence: mineral salts carried out of the masonry by moisture and left behind as the water dries. It appears as a white, chalky or crusty bloom. Similar-looking white can also come from a sealer that trapped moisture or from joint sand left on pavers, so it is worth identifying before anything is treated.
Can I use a rust remover on it?
No. Rust removers such as F9 BARC are made for iron and do nothing to efflorescence, which is a salt deposit rather than a metal stain. It needs an efflorescence or calcium remover, applied after a spot test, and never on a surface recently washed with bleach without a full rinse and dry.
My new pavers are turning white. What should I do?
Often, give them time. New pavers usually need a full season for efflorescence to work its way out, and much of it can settle on its own. They should not be sealed until it has, or the bloom gets locked under a clear coat.
How much does efflorescence removal cost?
It is quoted after Carson sees the surface and runs a spot test, because the surface, the amount of bloom and whether it sits under a sealer all change the job. If the test shows it is not a job we can complete, there is no charge.
