What Is an Ice Dam and Why Does It Matter?

Ice dams form when:

  • Heat escapes from your home and melts snow on the upper part of the roof

  • Meltwater runs down, hits the cold edge, and refreezes into a thick ridge of ice

  • That ice traps more meltwater behind it, which can work its way under your shingles and into your home

If ignored, ice dams can lead to:

  • Leaking ceilings and stained drywall

  • Damaged insulation

  • Rotten fascia and soffits

  • Slippery walkways and dangerous icicles along eaves

Fixing the damage after the leak is always more expensive than carefully removing the ice before it wins.

Our Ice Dam Removal Process

Inspection & Safety Setup

We walk the property, identify problem areas, and plan safe access.

Ladders, walkways, and work zones are set up to protect both your home and our crew.

On-Site Protection & Cleanliness

We manage where the melted ice and snow land so it doesn’t create new hazards around your foundation or walkways.

We work to keep your property clean, safe, and accessible while we’re there.

Steam-Only Ice Dam Cutting

We use purpose-built steam equipment designed specifically for ice dams.
Steam gently cuts channels through the ice so meltwater can escape without tearing up shingles or flashing.

We never use high pressure or swinging tools

Gutter & Downspout Clearing

As we open up the ice dam, we clear the gutters and downspouts underneath.

The goal is a clean path out for water so it can’t back up into the home again on the next thaw.

Documentation & Follow-Up

We document key areas as we work so you can see what was done and where the major issues were.

If requested, this documentation can be shared with your insurance adjuster or kept for your own records.

How We Protect Your Roof & Property

Who’s Actually On Your Roof?

Your roof isn’t something we gamble with. That’s why our approach includes:

  • Steam only – no pressure washing on shingles, ever

  • No chisels or hammers on the roof surface

  • Two experienced owner-operators on every job, with more than a decade of combined field experience

  • Fully insured up to $2M for your peace of mind

  • Careful ladder placement and roof access to avoid unnecessary wear or damage

We treat your roof like it’s our own—patient, controlled, and as gentle as the situation allows.

You’re not getting a random crew that rotates every week.

Every ice dam job is completed by two owner-operators who:

  • Have years of hands-on experience working in Minnesota winters

  • Personally care about your safety, your home, and your experience

  • Communicate clearly about what we’re doing and why

  • Show up when we say we will, and stay until the job is done right

You’re trusting us with your roof in the middle of winter—that trust matters.

Guarantees, Documentation & Policies

We can't control the weather, but we can control our standards.

How We Operate

  • Honesty first: If you don’t need a full roof cleared, we’ll tell you. If the risk is too high in certain areas, we’ll explain and recommend the safest option.

  • Clear scope before we start: We explain what we’ll do, where we’ll work, and what you can realistically expect once we’re done.

  • Documented work: Photos or video from key sections of the roof so you can see what we saw and what we fixed.

  • Safety-focused decision-making: If conditions are unsafe (extreme wind, dangerous access, structural concerns), we will pause or adjust the plan rather than push it and risk damage or injury.

You'll never be left guessing what we did, or why.

FAQs – Ice Dam Removal

Q:
Can you help with interior damage?

A:
I don’t do interior drywall, painting, or insulation work – my focus is on stopping the ice dam, and preventing further water intrusion.

I can, however:

  • Show you where the likely problem started

  • Provide photos and notes you can share with your roofer, contractor, or insurance

Q:
Will you damage my shingles?

A:
Our entire process is built around avoiding that.

We use low-pressure steam, not high-pressure water or hammers, and we work slowly and carefully in small sections.

q:
What Do I Need To Do To Prepare For My Removal?

A:
Almost nothing.

We ask that vehicles are clear of the driveway, and any concerns or questions you have are brought to our attention.

Other than that, relax and we'll get you taken care of!

Q:
How long does ice dam removal take?

A:

It depends on:

  • Size and thickness of the ice dams

  • Length of affected roofline

  • Roof pitch and access

  • Number of problem areas

A smaller, localized dam may take a couple of hours. Larger homes with long, heavy dams can take several hours or more. I’ll give you a realistic time estimate once I see your home in person or via photos.

Q:
Can the ice dams come back after you remove them?

A:
Yes — Any time the conditions are right for ice dam formation, new dams can form.

What we do is safely remove the existing ice, and restore proper drainage so your roof isn’t actively trapping water.

Q:
Do You Work In Extreme Cold?

A:
Yes –
Ice dam removal is a winter service so there are some limits in extreme conditions (ex: wind, dangerous ladder setup, unsafe roof conditions).

Most of the time it's totally fine. As long as it’s safe for us, and the roof- we'll be out there getting your problem taken care of sooner rather than later.

Q: Do you work with HOAs and townhome associations?

A:
Absolutely.

We handle individual homes or multi-building communities, and build seasonal plans that include monitoring, and priority response for known problem buildings.

Q:
How fast can you come out once I contact you?

A:
It depends on storms and demand, but we prioritize active leaks and safety concerns.

Reach out with your address and photos and we’ll give you an honest time frame, not a guess.
